I am walking to Santiago de Compostela for two reasons:
To walk the Camino Santiago de Compostela has been a long term dream. For years I have read camino books and stories watched films and talked to people about their experiences on the camino. Now, is the right time in my life to undertake this personal challenge and fulfil my dreams.
Secondly I want my Camino to help others, less fortunate than myself. Those who have known me for awhile will recall that previously I walked a section of "The Great Wall of China" to raise funds for a UK Charity. This time I am raising funds for the Kiribati School and Centre for Special Needs Children.
This school is a genuine organisation that receives funding and support from the Australian Government through the AusAID and is supported by third sector organisations such as Australian Volunteers International.
I am asking you to donate funds to the school. We have asked the school leaders to identify a project that my walk can support. After much discussion in the school community the school Executives and Management Committee have decided to use the funds (raised by us) towards a seawall to protect the school compound from severe erosion - the school fence is in danger of being washed away.
The Kiribati School and Centre for Children with Special Needs does not have a bank account which can accept International Telegraphic Transfers. We are having to transfer funds to Kiribati via a Westpac Bank Branch in New Zealand.
We have also set up a separate Bendigo Bank account to collect funds here in Australia and then transfer the funds to New Zealand paying only one Telegraphic Transfer Fee.
